To make a tray – a true handicraft! After I have hand-printed the textile for the trays, I cut it in the right size and make sure that the textile is wrinkle-free and dust-free. Then I send the textiles to the company Formpress in Färjestaden, on Öland. There they produce all serving-trays in a traditional manner using birch veneer in several layers, which you can tell from the striped edge. If you instead chose a mat or cutting-board the base will consist of HDF material. The mats and cutting-boards have a melamin-based surface that is resistant to heat and alcohol. The hand-printed textile is placed on top of the tray or mat. A layer of lacquer to protect and give a neat surface finalizes the procedure. The gathered material is put into a press where it with the help of high temperature and pressure is transformed from a bunch of veneer into a tray. To make the tray comfortable to hold and to increase its durability, the edges are rounded. The edges will then be lacquered to withstand wear and tear like for example dishwashing. The serving-trays in veneer endure machine-wash, however, the mats and cutting-boards don’t.
